So according to a sensational story in the Daily Nation last week, Kenyan men are drinking because Kenyan women have become too strong. I rolled my eyes with the requisite amount of disdain and remembered a few years ago when a friend’s marriage was falling apart. The guy is gay and through some mental acrobatics and a Christian upbringing, he convinced himself and a woman that they should marry. A few years of what he described as “disgusting copulation in the dark” and living a lie, she and her large breasts came to represent everything he hated about society and his life. Had he made...

This past week, the eye catching headline has been 'bring back our girls' in reference to the attack by Boko Haram militants who kidnapped school going girls. People all around the world from Michelle Obama to our own local leaders were lending their voices to this one important message. The question on most people's mind was why attack a girls' school not an army base? Why attack innocent children who only sought an education not military training? And why take the girls? In a New York Times article by Nicholas Kristof, he sought to answer these questions. So eloquent was his discussion,...

However, as the Constitution of Kenya Review Commission found in 2002, the popular desire for change went further. Every August, when school was out my cousins and I would be shipped off to upcountry to spend two weeks with my grandparents. I really looked forward to it because my grandfather was cool and his homestead is huge, and that to me translated to a big playing ground. Hanging out with my extended family was also a plus. My grandfather loved music, he would shuffle between Ramogi Radio, KBC and Radio citizen. I got to appreciate and love the diversity of Rhumba, Lingala, Luo songs and folk music. He was also an information junkie so BBC was definitely a preferred dial. At the house, there was...
