A key investor in the hospitality industry wants the government to increase categories of hotel items exempt from value added tax to boost local tourism. Hemingways Holdings CEO Alastair Addison said VAT exemptions for the hotel business only cover 11 categories out of the over 1,000 that the hospitality industry has to procure from abroad for set up or use in their facilities. He has asked the government to come up with ways to subsidise some of the costs incurred by hoteliers to spur more world class investments to boost Kenya's tourism sector.
