A “competitiveness divide” exists among African countries, which has reflected in poor performance by the continent on the Global Competitiveness Index 2013 released by the World Bank. Rankings in the report on a basis of 12 pillars shows South Africa – the best performing in the Africa Competitiveness Report 2013 – is 52 globally, while Burundi is last of all countries at 144.
