KAKAMEGA County Assembly is considering introducing Luhya as a language for debate. This is not a good idea. If the precedent is accepted, it will spread to all 47 county assemblies and create a form of apartheid where one ethnic group excludes another. The Luhya have many dialects, generally but not always comprehensible to each other. But misunderstandings could be much worse in assemblies where members speak totally different languages, such as Maasai and Kikuyu. Some members could be completely excluded if the proceedings were conducted in a local language...
