I’m not buying IDs – Chanzu

Former Vihiga MP Yusuf Chanzu has said he is not in the business of buying IDs in Vihiga county.

He said since he ditched ANC for Jubilee, NASA co-principal Musalia Mudavadi, Vihiga Senator George Khaniri and Sabatia MP Alfred Agoi have been tarnishing his name.

Chanzu said it does not make sense that he buys IDs, yet he needs the same people to vote for Jubilee.

The former MP, who contested for Vihiga governor on the ANC ticket but lost, said he delivered all the seats in his Vihiga constituency.

“As I was busy campaigning for ANC, they were backstabbing me by supporting somebody else,” he said.

Chanzu was speaking on Saturday when he met Jubilee supporters from Vihiga.

He said those calling him a “tumbocrat” are wrong as he is not in Jubilee for money.

Chanzu said on August 8, Jubilee got 18,000 votes from the county, but he will make sure the tables turn on October 26.

He promised to deliver more than 100,000 votes from Vihiga to Jubilee.

Chanzu said Mudavadi is not popular enough even in his backyard, saying he lost in the 2002 election to the then little-known Moses Akaranga.

Last week, during a NASA rally, Agoi apologised to the people of Vihiga for asking them to vote for “moles”.

On Wednesday last week, Chanzu was among leaders who joined Jubilee and were welcomed to the party by Deputy President William Ruto.

Chanzu said he is disappointed with Mudavadi for supporting Governor Wilbur Ottichilo of ODM.

He said he wants to work with the government for the good of the people of Vihiga.

Chanzu said, “I have been in elective posts since 1997. I’m not in Jubilee because of money.”

Kibor’s ‘daughter’ Loise demands DNA test after mother loses divorce cas

A ‘daughter’ of veteran politician Jackson Kibor now wants DNA tests conducted to prove that he is her biological father.

Loise Kibor is the daughter of Kibor’s second wife Josephine who lost a divorce case with her husband on Friday last week.

Chief magistrate Charles Obulutsa ordered that the couple’s 51-year marriage certificate be cancelled on grounds of Josephine’s cruelty to her 83-year-old husband.

Josephine was given 30 days to appeal the ruling.

She already indicated that her lawyers will file an appeal this week.

During the hearing, Kibor had disowned Loise.

He said he married her mother in 1966 when she was already carrying the pregnancy.

“I don’t recognise her as my daughter and I will not give her anything as inheritance,” Kibor said in Eldoret after Friday’s ruling.

However, Loise insisted that Kibor is her biological father and demanded that a DNA test be conducted to prove the claim.

“I am ready to go for DNA tests anywhere to prove that Kibor is my biological father,” Loise said.

She said the test must be conducted in a public hospital with independent medics who cannot be influenced by the wealthy businessman.

Laboso leads JP MPs in campaign for Uhuru

Jubilee leaders at the weekend held a series of rallies in Bomet county, where they asked NASA presidential candidate Raila Odinga to quit active politics.

Led by Bomet Governor Joyce Laboso, Woman Representative Joyce Korir, North Horr MP Chachu Ganya and former Othaya MP Mary Wambui, the leaders said Raila was too old to lead the country.

They appealed to residents of the South Rift to rally behind President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto. They said the duo deserve a second term in office for their development record. Uhuru will face off with Raila in the October 26 repeat presidential election. “Kenya requires a leader who can unite the country. I am appealing to residents of the South Rift to reelect Uhuru so that he can steer the country to a higher level of economic development,” Laboso said.

The race for promotion to the SportPesa Premier League intensified with the top three National Super League sides separated by a point.
Log leaders Vihiga United, second placed Kenya Commercial Bank and third-placed Ushuru—all recorded crucial wins in weekend fixtures. Vihiga returned to winning ways, beating Kenya Police 3-0 at Karuturi grounds in Naivasha on Saturday.
Ugandan import Rashid Kyambadde, Patrick Okulo and Clyde Senaji were on target for the Vihiga County Government-sponsored outfit. Chris Onyango scored the lone goal as KCB saw off relegation-threatened Mosca 1-0 at Camp Toyoyo grounds in Jericho to maintain the second position while at Afraha Stadium in Nakuru, Ushuru edged out hosts Nakuru All Stars 2-1.
All Stars defender scored two unfortunate own goals with Joseph Chege scoring for All Stars. The hosts finished the game with 10 men after Peter Ng’ang’a was given his marching orders. Vihiga remained top of the log with 62 points from 29 matches with KCB second with 61 while Ushuru are third with 60 points. On Wednesday, Vihiga hosts KCB at Mumias Sports Complex, a game expected to be explosive.
Wazito playing without their coach Frank Ouna, who traveled with the National team Harambee Stars for friendly matches against Iraq and Thailand ended their jinx against Nairobi Stima with a 2-0 win. Dennis Gicheru scored Wazito’s first goal through a penalty which was awarded after Joe Waithira was brought down in the box. Kennedy Ayieko added the second after he was put through by Pistone Mutamba.
Cash strapped Isibania FC played to a barren draw with Golden Field Evangelism (GFE 105) at Kipchoge Keino Stadium in Eldoret while the game between strugglers Agro Chemicals and Administration was abandoned at Muhoroni Stadium after AP players protested a decision to award Agro a penalty. In other games played on Friday, Kibera Black Stars held Bidco United to a 1-1 draw while the game between Talanta and Palos ended in a barren stalemate. St Joseph’s Youth upset hosts Modern Coast Rangers 1-0 at KPA Mbaraki grounds in Mombasa. The win lifted the Nakuru-based side from relegation zone.

Hope as Muhoroni , Stima fight for survival

Just a week ago it seemed obvious that Muhoroni Youth and Western Stima were certain candidates for relegation at the end of the 2017 SportPesa Premier League season but now more than ever, they seem to have found in them the fighting spirit to beat the drop.
Saturday’s unlikely wins for the two hitherto relegation bound clubs saw them leave the drop zone for the first time in months exchanging places with now basement club Mathare United and improving Thika United who were not in action.
In their seven-goal thriller at Ruaraka against Nakumatt who were reinstated to the top tier league earlier last week, Muhoroni’s Collins Agade drilled an unstoppable shot that gave Muhoroni the lead that was doubled five minutes to the break by Hassan Kiyoyi.
Nakumatt hit the ground running in the second half, pulling a goal back in 68th minutes via Kennedy Onyango, only for Muhoroni to return their two goals cushion three minutes later when John Njoroge found the target. Kivovi completed his brace in the 78th minute with an expertly taken penalty as Muhoroni went 4-1 up.
The retailers got two quick fire goals in the 81st and 86th minutes through Peter Nzuki and Faruk Mudoola but their threatened dramatic comeback ran out of time.
That win so Muhoroni move up to 16th in the eighteen team league with 24 points
For Stima’s new coach Richard Makumbi, the victory over flip flopping Bandari was God-sent. The hosts went ahead at the half hour mark when Robert Achema smashed home a cross delivered by Ugandan Villa Omrochan.
Darius Msagha levelled matters for Bandari early in the second half after combining well with Abdalla Hassan but Oromchan then scored the decisive goal late in the game with a low drive that proved too hot to handle for Bandari custodian Wilson Obungu. For the first time, Stima are out of the relegation zone with 26 points. Mathare are bottom with 23 points—one behind second from bottom Thika.

Raila off to UK, US ahead of poll

A decision by Opposition leader Raila Odinga to fly out of the country just days to repeat presidential election has caused panic in Jubilee.

Some of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s handlers fear that the NASA leader may not return before Election Day, October 26.

It is unclear how long Raila will be out of the country, which countries he is scheduled to visit and the reasons for his visits. His spokesman Dennis Onyango confirmed yesterday the former Prime Minister will be heading to the United Kingdom.

Jubilee leaders, however, fear that the NASA presidential candidate may not return to participate in the election and therefore cause a political and constitutional crisis.

Yesterday the Star learnt that the Opposition has launched a diplomatic push against US Ambassador to Kenya Robert Godec, for allegedly misadvising Washington on Kenya’s political realities.

The behind-the-scenes intrigues emerged as Raila prepares to jet out to London for a series of high- profile engagements, including giving a lecture at the the Royal Institute of International Affairs, commonly known as Chatham House.

The Royal Institute’s mission is to analyse and promote the understanding of major international issues and current affairs.

Raila was also scheduled to travel to the US for a string of engagements, including with senior State Department officials, but this trip appears to have been put on hold.

“Yes, he will travel to the UK anytime this week,” Onyango told the Star yesterday.

By Friday, at least six institutions had confirmed scheduled meetings with Raila in the US.

These include the Center for Strategic and International Studies, the Council for Foreign Relations, a number of senior officials at the United Nations and State Department as well as the National Security Council.

He was also to meet a section of US congressman and senators.

The diplomatic charm offensive comes as NASA intensifies its anti-repeat election crusade with only 16 days to the vote.

NASA plans to heighten demonstrations across the country from two days to three days a week – Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Kisumu Senator Anyang’ Nyong’o, a key Raila ally, has been in the US for weeks and part of his brief is to “set the record straight” on Kenya's political landscape.

A former high-flying diplomat in the Grand Coalition Government of 2008-2013 has also been engaged to help court diplomats and convey the NASA narrative.

“Godec is not giving honest communication to Washington. The brief that the American government is receiving is purely a Jubilee narrative,” a source within the Opposition told the Star.

Western envoys in Kenya, including Godec, have always maintained that they are neutral.

“We are neutral and have no agenda other than to help ensure the Kenyan people have a successful election. We do not support any party, any candidate, or any outcome. We did not back any politician in the August 8 election, and we will not for this poll either,” Godec and EU ambassadors and High Commissioners said last week.

The Jubilee-championed amendments to the Election Laws, which the Donald Trump administration has criticised, have given NASA the gusto to press on.

Sources said Nyongo's engagement with State Department officials and influential US academics and policy think tanks was responsible for a statement released by the Trump administration on Friday.

In the statement, Washington said they remain committed to supporting the repeat presidential polls under the “current laws”.

“We remain committed to supporting a free, fair, and credible election that is consistent with Kenya's Constitution, current laws, and institutions, and we do not back any party or candidate,” State Department Spokesman Heather Nauert said.

“Changing electoral laws without broad agreement just prior to a poll is not consistent with international best practice, increases political tension, and undermines public perceptions of the integrity of the electoral process.”

Nauert however censored politicians for what she termed as baseless and unreasonable demands on the IEBC.

NASA's discomfort with Godec became apparent last week, after Siaya Senator James Orengo blasted the diplomat for allegedly overstepping his mandate.

“We are not going to be blackmailed. We are not very enthusiastic about going to the United States of America. The diplomat has overstepped his mandate, our sovereignty cannot be surrendered to anyone,” Orengo said.

“We are taken aback by utterances by the Diplomatic Community. They too have issues from their mother countries to deal with. America also has its own problems.”

NASA believes Jubilee is advantaged in influencing the Western position in Kenya.

They cite government envoys and influential US lobbyists on the government payroll.

The government has previously used the Podesta Group, an influential Washington lobbying firm, to advocate for the country’s interests with US policymakers and to improve Kenya’s image.

Separately, Jubilee Party has also engaged global data mining company Cambridge Analytica and British PR firm BTP Advisers.

Raila's overseas charm offensive two weeks to the election confirms that the former PM could make good his threats to boycott the polls.

There have been claims that in 2007, US Ambassador Michael Ranneberger secretly supported then President Mwai Kibaki.

In June this year, Ken Flottman, who led US-based International Republican Institute to observe the 2007 Kenyan polls, described how Ranneberger gave inaccurate accounts to Washington.

In an article titled, “The debacle of 2007: How Kenyan Politics Was Frozen and an Election Stolen with US Connivance”, Flottman says that Ranneberger urged Kenyans to accept the disputed results announced by the now-defunct ECK.

“Ranneberger in Nairobi made no disclosure [of discrepancies] of what he had witnessed but encouraged Kenyans to accept the results announced by the ECK that Sunday and formal congratulations were issued from a State Department spokesman back in the US,” he wrote.

“European foreign ministries and diplomats in the meantime criticized what was obviously a highly irregular process, with the suspect tallies and the hurried, secretive swearing-in of Kibaki. On Monday, the State Department changed position through its main spokesman in Washington, saying that ‘we are not congratulating anyone’.”

Raila can’t be president as Joho is governor – Omar

Former Mombasa Senator Hassan Omar yesterday said he will campaign for President Uhuru Kenyatta ahead of October 26 presidential election.

He said he lost trust in opposition leaders when they hounded the former IEBC commissioners out of office over “fabricated claims”.

“We cannot have a situation where NASA leader Raila Odinga is President and Hassan Joho is Mombasa Governor. It is a traumatic prospect,” Omar said.

He urged Mombasa residents to “wake up from slumber” and realise the port city is being ruined by “incompetent” leadership.

Omar spoke in Serani, Mombasa, where the government issued title deeds to five institutions that have been struggling to get land ownership documents for a long time.

The President witnessed the issuance of title deeds to Serani Primary School, Mbaraki Secondary School, Mbaraki Nursery School, Serani Sports Ground and the Bohra community.

The institutions have been battling attempts by prominent people to grab their land.

Uhuru listed development projects initiated by his administration in the last four-and-a-half years at the Coast.

They include roads, construction of dams, issuing of title deeds, installation of electricity to homes and increased monthly stipend for the elderly.

The President said title deeds to the five institutions are part of his agenda to correct historical injustices.

More than three million title deeds have been issued to Kenyans during the Jubilee’s administration.

The President said all he wished is a peaceful nation, growing on the back of investment and hard work by its leaders.

That resolve had been tested by the Supreme Court’s decision to annul the August 8 presidential election.

Uhuru said he understood the opposition expected he would not accept the ruling, allowing them to spark violence and bloodshed as their shortcut to a negotiated power-sharing agreement.

The President spoke at an event attended by more than 20,000 Muslim delegates.

Sheikh Khalifa said the opposition failed to deliver anything to the people of the region.

“We will not support people who have the characteristics of mosquitoes. They bring malaria, dengue fever and other diseases. We want to follow the bee. The bee produces honey after visiting different plants,” he said.

Lamu Governor Fahim Twaha said some of the leading figures aided the grabbing of more than one million acres in his county during the coalition government.

Apex court to advise on chair altering Forms 34B

The Supreme Court will today give directions on whether IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati can correct errors in the presidential election results.

Chebukati filed the case seeking clarification on what he should do in case there are discrepancies in the presidential results forms.

Parties were last Friday notified to appear before the top court this morning.

Through lawyer Kamau Karori, Chebukati, who is also the national returning officer, wants the court to clarify what he ought to do with the errors, if any, after verifying the presidential statutory forms.

The current law bars the IEBC chairman from altering results contained in Forms 34B. The results are final as announced at the constituency level. But the IEBC says there is confusion as the Supreme Court ruling on September 20 said the chairman must verify the results before declaring the presidential winner.

Karori said it is necessary the court clarifies whether Chebukati and the commission can correct errors in Forms 34B, when the results do not tally or conform with the results captured in Forms 34A.

The court, in a majority decision, nullified the August 8 presidential election results, citing irregularities and illegalities in the transmission of results.

Chief Justice David Maraga, DCJ Philomena Mwilu, justices Smokin Wanjala and Isaac Lenaola ruled that the illegalities and irregularities were of substantial nature to affect the final outcome. But justices Jackton Ojwang’ and Njoki Ndung’u dissented.

The commission said there is more confusion since the court, quoting the Court of Appeal in the Maina Kiai case, said the chairman cannot correct, vary, confirm, alter, modify or adjust the results.

In the Maina Kiai case, five judges of the Court of Appeal ruled on June 2017 that the results declared at the constituency level are final and it is only an election court that can correct an error in the statutory forms.

The Court of Appeal had said it would be “fallacious and flies in the face of clear principles and values of the Constitution” to claim the IEBC chairman can alone at the National Tallying Centre or wherever, “purport to confirm, vary, or verify the results arrived at through an open, transparent and participatory process”.

The judges were of the view the chairman is represented by his officers in all the 40,883 polling stations, all the constituencies and county tallying centres.

We’ll back Uhuru, changes in poll laws - West Pokot MPs

A section of MPs from West Pokot county have said they will back the amendments on the electoral laws. The leaders also urged residents to support President Uhuru Kenyatta during the repeat election.

The legislators said contrary to allegations by the opposition, the proposed law will not curtail powers of independent institutions. They spoke during the homecoming celebration of Suam MCA Robert Komole in Kopolio village.

The lawmakers included Kacheliba MP Mark Lomunokol (pictured), Kapenguria’s Samuel Moroto and West Pokot woman representative Lillian Tomitom.

They said the amendments will address glaring challenges in electoral laws.

“We have no network in some areas. If we had the manual system, the country could not be going back to the election. We don’t want to spoil the country and we should have the two systems, in case one fails,” Lomunokol said.

They faulted NASA leaders for calling demonstrations, saying they are hurting the economy. “The country’s economy is headed in the wrong direction. If the situation persists, the country will be divided,” Lomunokol said. Moroto said the Constitution allows “too much freedom”.

“Former President Daniel Moi and DP William Ruto knew the Constitution had issues. We have not reached that level of getting too much freedom. We should revert to the former systems,” he said.

Moroto urged NASA MPs to back the amendments. “The law might haunt them if they boycott participation. They should come during the third reading and participate if they want to make changes,” Moroto said.

Tomitom faulted NASA over is push to remove IEBC officials.

“Kenyans vote for leaders and the courts should not alter anything. NASA should concentrate on campaigning ,” she said.

2 to die for killing girl who refused sexual advances

A court has sentenced to death two Laikpia herdsmen who fatally stabbed a class eight girl for refusing their sexual advances.

Stephen Ntukai and Francis Lukuiye, both 31, were found guilty of murdering Nayiiiana Yiangere on May 16, 2012, at Kimanjo village in Laikipia North subcounty.

Kimen Yiangere, the girl’s father, told the court Ntukai had previously threatened to kill his daughter if she continued to refuse to have sex with him.

Nanyuki High Court resident judge Mary Kasango said their action was driven by selfish desires.

“It was cruel for the two to kill a defenseless 16-year-old girl who was described as an obedient child by her father,” Justice Kasango said in her judgment.

The two men stabbed Nayiiana several times while she was fetching firewood.

She was a pupil at Kimanjo primary school.

The girl had returned from school and her mother asked her to collect firewood.

She picked an axe and headed to a thicket far from home. She met the herders along the way. It was the last time she was seen alive.

Her body was found the following day, a few metres from the spot where passersby had seen her standing with the two herders the previous evening.

Yiangere told the court he had warned Nkutai to stay away and not to hurt his daughter.

“My daughter was still young and in school,” Yiangere said.

Although evidence showed it was only -one of the accused, Nkutai, who was seeking a relationship with the girl, the two men jointly committed the act of murder, Justice Kasango ruled.

Give jobs fairly, Embu belongs to all of us, Ndwiga tells Wambora

Embu Senator Njeru Ndwiga yesterday urged Governor Martin Wambora not to discriminate in awarding top county jobs against communities that didn’t vote for him.

He called for cohesion, peace and political stability amongst all the communities in Embu.

Ndwiga said the county government belongs to every person who lives in Embu, regardless of their political leanings.

He said a governor is a uniting figure.

Ndwiga said residents have a right to be represented in the government and Wambora should ensure equity in appointment of executives and chief officers.

“Whether people gave you votes or not, they belong to Embu county and thus they are supposed to be in the government through representation,” he said.

Ndwiga spoke to the Star at a hotel in Embu. He said he spoke to Wambora who assured him that no corner of the county will be left without representation in the government.

Last Friday Mbeere South MP Geoffrey King’ang’i said his constituents have been denied senior county jobs because the majority voted for Wambora’s rival Lenny Kivuti.

King’ang’i said his constituents have been sidelined in the ongoing appointments of executives, chief officers and others for not overwhelmingly voting for Wambora.

Wambora denied the allegations, saying among the 11 CECs he has appointed two are from Mbeere South. They are Anne Mukami (Agriculture, Cooperative Development, Livestock and Fisheries) and Joan Mwende (Gender, Children and Social Services.

On August 8 Wambora was reelected on the Jubilee Party ticket with 97,602 votes against former Senator Kivuti’s 96,670. Wambora got only 5,735 votes in Mbeere South against Kivuti’s 40,437.

Kivuti has challenged Wambora’s win in court

Kiraitu to work with Meru MPs and MCAs

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has promised to involve elected leaders in development.

“In these boards, we will be working closely with MCAs and MPs in participatory planning and identification of projects for funding by the county and national government,” he said.

Kiraitu spoke in his office on Friday where he met legislators. He urged the leaders to work together.

They include Kawira Mwangaza (woman rep), Rahim Dawood (North Imenti), Mugambi Rindikiri (Buuri), John Mwirigi (Igembe South), Moses Kirima (Central Imenti), Kathuri Murungi (Imenti South) and Halima Mucheke (nominated).

During campaigns, Kiraitu criticised his predecessor Peter Munya for not involving MPs in county affairs. He accused Munya of being a know-it-all who would not pick calls from other leaders.

Ignore NASA protests meant to sabotage economy - Matiang’i

Interior CS Fred Matiang’i has urged Kenyans not to join NASA leaders in anti-IEBC demonstrations that damage the economy.

“The demonstrations we are witnessing in parts of the country are not necessary,” the acting CS said on Sunday.

“Those people are not exercising their rights, but are engaging in economic sabotage. Shun the demonstrations.”

Matiang’i spoke at Nyakongo High School, Nyamira, during the burial of Johnson Gichana — Nyamira woman MP Jerusha Momanyi’s father-in-law.

He said protests undermine businesses and livelihoods. He told Nyamira and Kisii residents to stay away.

NASA has called for demonstrations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to force out IEBC secretariat staff it accuses of bungling the August 8 polls. It wants Jubilee to scrap proposed contentious poll law amendments.

“We are a hardworking people. We should not be misled to join meaningless demonstrations,” Matiang’i said.

The presidential rerun will be held on October 26 by law, he said.

“As a minister in charge of internal security, I want to assure you the government is ready to support the IEBC, which is a constitutionally mandated body to do elections.”

He urged leaders to be mature and be wary of their speeches and actions ahead of the election.

Matiang’i praised Kitutu Masaba residents for voting out former MP Timothy Bosire.

“Bosire had become an irritant, insulting everybody and whistling in Parliament,” he said.

MPs Joash Nyamoko (North Mugirango), Shadrack Mose (Kitutu Masaba) and Ben Momanyi (Borabu) accompanied the CS.

Nyamoko urged the Abagusii community to unite under one political umbrella.

“We should come together and share views as a community. We should not be carried away by the politics of euphoria. The interests of the community are better served in Jubilee Party,” he said.

Nyamoko and Momanyi urged Kenyans to pray for peace.

Momanyi said all the elected leaders in Nyamira have resolved to work together regardless of their political affiliations.

Mose, Nyamoko and Jerusha supported for President Uhuru Kenyatta’s reelection and dismissed NASA, saying it has nothing to offer.

“Elected leaders have agreed to work together. Our main purpose is to serve people who elected us,” Nyamoko said.

Former Kitutu Masaba MP Walter Nyambati said they have launched massive campaigns for Uhuru.”

“We want to confirm on October 26 that Nyamira is a Jubilee zone,” he said.

Jubilee targets minority Kurias in hunt for votes

The Jubilee Party is going all out to win the Kuria vote in NASA’s Migori backyard in the presidential rerun on October 26.

On Wednesday, President Uhuru Kenyatta and DP William Ruto hosted more than 2,000 delegates from the community. Delegates always leave these meeting with gifts and promises intended to sway their votes.

Jubilee legislators from the region — Kuria East’s Marwa Kitayama and his Kuria West counterpart Mathias Robi (pictured), hosted the meeting. They pledged to ensure Uhuru gets more votes than on August 8.

Those results were nullified by the Supreme Court, which cited enormous irregularities and illegalities. It said the results cannot be relied upon.

Uhuru had 41,951 votes (65 per cent of the cast votes) against Raila Odinga’s 21,202 votes (34 per cent).

However, Suba MP and ODM national chairman John Mbadi has said the Kurias cannot fall for Jubilee’s “primitive and pathetic politics of handouts”.

“The number in State House will not represent the voters in Kuria. We plan to have rallies in the region to directly talk to residents. Politics of State House handouts ended during the Moi era,” he said.

But Robi said the community will vote for Uhuru.

“Raila’s brand of politics has no place in Kuria. He will never be President. Since Independence, we have been ignored, but we’ve seen development under the Jubilee administration,” Robi, a Jubilee pointman in Nyanza, said.

He cited the tarmacking of Masara-Kehancha-Tarang’anya, Mabera-Nyamosense roads, building of Kehancha TTC and Mabera Technical Institute. Establishment of two new subcounties — Ntimaru and Mabera — has buoyed the JP campaigns.

Kakamega anti-IEBC demos stall, youth say they haven’t been paid to take to streets

NASA’s anti-IEBC demonstrations failed to take off yesterday in Kakamega and opposition supporters blamed lack of commitment by elected leaders.

Police started patrolling the streets of Kakamega town in the early morning, but no one appeared.

Some NASA supporters said they wanted to see if Governor Wycliffe Oparanya can organise the protests and lead from the front.

“We have since confirmed he cannot. We organised last Monday’s and Friday’s protests and he took the credit. We’ll be back on Wednesday,” a NASA supporter said.

Yesterday, Kakamega county ANC youth leader Jeff Mwenje said NASA supporters did not go to the streets after elected leaders told them they did not have money to facilitate the protests.

Some sources said protesters who participated in Monday’s demos kept off further demos after they were left hungry in the previous protests by leaders.

An MCA said top county leaders are not serious with the protests and are only waiting for them to facilitate — finance — the protests, then come and take credit.

Oparanya, Deputy Governor Philip Kutima and eight NASA MPs skipped last Monday demos.

Oparanya later said as a commander, he did not need to be on the streets.

Only Kakamega woman representative Elsie Muhanda and some MCAs participated.

Lugari MP Ayub Savula said he was attending to his sick father.

Lurambi MP Titus Khamala said he was still waiting for ANC’s position on the protests.

Oparanya joined the Friday protests and called for a federal system of government to cure ethnicity and electoral fraud.

NASA has now called from demonstrations three days a week, up from two. Now they will be held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays to demand reform of the IEBC and scrapping election law amendments.

Kakamega NASA supporters led by Senator Cleophas Malala on Thursday notified police they would hold protests across the county on three days a week.

Only death can make me leave Jubilee, says former Kanduyi MP

Only death will remove me from the Jubilee Party, former Kanduyi MP Alfred Khang’ati has said.

He said he suffered a lot in the hands of ODM leader Raila Odinga and said, “I have seen the light.”

Khang’ati, who decamped from ODM last week, said only Jubilee has the ability to unite Kenyans.

The former MP unsuccessfully ran for Bungoma governor and lost to Ford Kenya’s Wycliffe Wangamati.

He said he regrets wasting all his time in the opposition.

Khang’ati on Friday said NASA leaders, including Raila, deserted him when he lost in the election.

‘’Everyone in NASA ran away when I failed to clinch the governor’s seat. No one was picking my calls until Jubilee came to my rescue,’’ he said.

Khang’ati apologised to Jubilee supporters in the county for opposing them in the August election.

He promised to work with them to ensure President Uhuru Kenyatta is reelected.

Three-horse race as SPL promotion battle intensifies

The twists and turns in the fight for promotion to the SportPesa Premier League continued to unfold as Vihiga United, KCB and Ushuru remained the top contenders for the coveted slots.

Vihiga put behind them a patchy run of results in September to wallop Police FC 3-0 to reclaim top spot in the National Super League. Rashid Kyimbade, Clyde Semaji and Patrick Okullo scored the goals at the Karuturi Stadium in Naivasha to give visitors Vihiga all three points. The win for Edward Manoah’s side pushed them to 62 points—one clear of KCB.

The bankers found the going unexpectedly tough against relegation-bound Mosca, eventually claiming a 1-0 win. Top striker Chrispinus Onyango scored the lone goal that kept the bankers in the second automatic promotion berth. If the amended relegation and promotion rules brought by the federation at the start of the season holds, as things stand, Ushuru will have a chance of returning to the top division at the first time of asking albeit via the play-offs.

The tax-men occupy the third position in the standings with 60 points from 28 matches after edging another former Premier League side Nakuru All Stars 2-1 at Afraha Stadium.

All Stars right back Teddy Siwa was the villain with a couple of own goals that consigned his side to the home loss and ended all the little hopes they had of a return to the big time. The biggest losers in the promotion race were Nairobi Stima who were beaten 2-0 by fellow contenders Wazito FC. Dennis Gicheru’s penalty and Zach Gathu’s tap in damaged Stima’s hopes of staying closer to the top three candidates. Ibrahim Shikanda’s power men are fourth with 56 points.

For the second time in a row, Stray Lions and Swamibapa failed to bag maximum points despite registering wins in their respective Nairobi Provincial Cricket Association (NPCA) Super League matches on Sunday.

The two league title hopefuls had to contend with only three and two batting points in their weekend wins over Cutchi Leva and Ruaraka— a performance that gave current leaders Kanbis an edge at the top with nine matches to play.

Batting first, hosts Stray Lions only posted 266 for 9, missing the maximum four batting points by nine runs. Swamibapa missed out on the maximum batting points by 49 runs after being restricted to 266 for 9 at Ruaraka.

With the result, Kanbis who comfortably beat hosts Kongonis by 221 runs, extended their lead at the top of the table with 174 points—six ahead of second-placed Stray Lions and 21 more than third-placed Swamibapa. After winning the toss, both Stray Lions and Swamibapa seemed not to have come in terms with the absence of their national team players as their opponents ripped through their batting order with ease, denying them all the four batting points.

Of the two underdogs, hosts Ruaraka were a more determined side as they chocked Swamibapa’s batting order by allowing only one batsman to score half a ton.

Only Subham Patel with 72 from 52 balls and Mitesh Sangani with unbeaten on 44 were able to give much resistance to Ruaraka bowlers led by Purshotam Vekaria (3 for 50) and Samay Shrivastar (3 for 24).

In defence of 226, Jadavji Bhimji (4 for 27) and Lameck Onyango (4 for 26) then took all but two wickets as the hosts were bowled out for 84 in 28.5 overs in an inning that had only two players scoring more than 10 runs. At Peponi School, Mahendra Siyani (3 for 60) and Hiten Vekaria (3 for 41) shared six wickets between them to restrict Stray Lions to 266 for 9.

Manoj Sai and Neil Narvekar put on a fight in the middle with 59 and 54 respectively despite Vekaria and Siyani’s onslaughts on their batting line up. In reply, Nikhil Date bagged six wickets to lead his side in restricting Cutchi Leva for 56. At Nairobi Club, Under-19 skipper Sachin Bhudia was the star with the bat with a patient 71 as Kanbis posted 330. Ramesh Mepani and Rakesh Kahar were also impressive with the bat with 62 runs each. Elsewhere, Sandip Adole scored the only century of the day as hosts Sikh Union Nairobi beat neighbours Nairobi Gymkhana by 44 runs.

After winning the toss, Sikh Union posted 302 for nine with Adole scoring 144. In reply, the visitors could only manage 258 for 9 with Dominic Wesonga scoring 82 from 55 balls.

Deputy President William Ruto is forming his 2022 presidential campagin team and former Senator Hassan Omar is a key player in Mombasa.

On Monday, Ruto endorsed Omar for the governor seat in 2022 in front of Jubilee candidate Suleiman Shahbal and President Uhuru Kenyatta.

While inviting Omar to speak, Ruto said, “Haiya. Wa mwisho ni ndugu yetu, seneta wa zamani, kwa mapenzi ya Mungu, atakayekuwa gavana, In Sha Allah, wa Mombasa hii, Senator Hassan Omar Sarai. (Okay. Lastly, it’s our brother, former senator, who, God willing, will become governor of Mombasa, Senator Hassan Omar Sarai.”)

order of speaking

The order of speaking also pointed to the importance Ruto and Jubilee leaders attached to Omar.

The former Wiper secretary general spoke just before Uhuru and was introduced by Ruto himself.

Other leaders were invited to speak by Tourism CS and Jubilee Coast point man-designate Najib Balala.

The exception was  former Taita Taveta Governor John Mruttu who also defected to Jubilee from ODM,

Sources indicate Omar was fronted by Balala, who insiders say is more comfortable working with Omar than with Shahbal.

Omar said he and Balala respect each other and always consulted one another on issues affecting Mombasa, despite being in different camps.

“I have never had a person in Jubilee who has respected me and supported me, not necessarily in the election, like Najib Mohamed Balala,” he said.

In 2013, Omar beat Balala to win the Senate seat.

Omar said Balala then called him and assured him of his full, unequivocal support. He also heaped praise on Ruto, saying the Deputy President was the first to call him after his August 8 loss to Governor Hassan Joho.
